Mercy Aid is a Christian organisation that is transforming communities in some of the neediest nations of the world. We are motivated through our belief in a God who made mankind and who offers an abundant life to all who call upon His name. We work in partnership with many Christian groups, including churches and development and community-based organisations. We endeavour to respond in a Biblical way to the problems of poverty, injustice and suffering, as well as supporting persecuted Christians in many countries around the world. All members of Mercy Aid are volunteers. This means that the majority of funds raised can be passed on to our partners where it can be used to maximum effect.
We are involved in:
Planting local churches in unreached areas
Leading training conferences for local pastors and leaders
Providing educational opportunities to disadvantaged children
Care of Orphans and Widows
Practical support for persecuted Christians
Working to secure justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression.
History
Following a visit to India in 1985, Neville was impacted by the huge need in that country, particularly after visiting the slums of Bombay (now Mumbai). In 1988 Neville and his wife Deirdre visited India again and spent time with a Christian pastor who had a heart to work in the slums of Bombay. This pastor used to be an actor in the Bollywood movie industry but gave it up to share Christ and care for the many poor and homeless in the city’s slum community. As a result of these two initial trips, Mercy Aid International was born with the initial purpose to help educate the many slum children who did not attend school due to their family's poor circumstances. Over the years the scope has now grown much wider as described above.
