Mercy Aid supports orphans in India, Uganda and Thailand and includes both educational and medical assistance, and the provision of basic necessities. In Uganda, the numbers of orphans are at record levels due to the HIV/AIDS scourge, civil conflict and rebel insurgency over many years. A significant area of support is for child-headed households (CHHs), where children who are orphans live together as a family unit in their own houses, sometimes with a relative living close by. Support is in the form of education assistance and the giving of agricultural inputs. These inputs consist of goats for breeding and seed for planting crops along with training that will help the children learn basic skills to feed themselves and generate an income. In India, several pastors we work with have upwards of twelve orphans living with them.
