Uganda was described by Winston Churchill as the 'Pearl of Africa', but since independence in 1962, many regarded the country as dangerously unstable and to be avoided. The infamous Idi Amin ruled the country from 1971 to 1979 and was responsible for human rights abuse, ethnic persecution and gross mismanagement to name a few. In recent years though, stability has returned to most parts of the country and Ugandans are a friendly and welcoming people.
